Warwick Farm Preview: Wednesday 1 May

WARWICK FARM

Track: Good 4

Rail: True entire

Weather: Mostly fine

Back to Warwick Farm on Wednesday where the track is Good and the rail is in the True, giving every runner their chance to perform.

RACE 1

Speed map/race shape: The two-year-olds tackle the 1200m. Expect Diamond Thunder and Hulk to press on from mid-wide draws, while Chelsea Reign may use the rail to race handily.

Advantaged runners: Five debutants and two previous winners in the field of 11 for the opener. Our winners DIAMOND THUNDER and CHELSEA REIGN won their respective divisions of the 2YO Maidens at Hawesbury on 16/4. The gelding Diamond Thunder absorbed plenty of pressure and still won in dominant fashion. On times that was the superior heat but Chelsea Reign still maps for a good run here. That still might not be good enough to beat HULK who is the class of the field, having placed behind Lankan Star on debut in January. Waller-trained stablemates BORN TO PLAY and JOLIETTE have trialled well for their debuts, as has the Deep Field colt RIGEL for John O’Shea.

RACE 2

Speed map/race shape: Only six acceptors in the Mares-only sprint. Dylan’s Deeva should lead relatively easily from Leami Astray and Montrachet.

Advantaged runners: MONTRACHET is the class of the field and resumed in a very winnable race. She’s only been seen twice since placing in the G3 Hawkesbury Guineas 12 months ago, most recently pulling up with issues in November. Under Brock Ryan’s claim and from a handy position in running she’ll go very close. DYLAN’S DEEVA and LEAMI ASTRAY will give her something to chase – the latter has been competitive at the midweeks of late. MY MAHER comes to the city third up after contesting hot country events and is the big closer.

RACE 3

Speed map/race shape: Three debutants in the 3YO Maiden. Of the raced, Hostwin Supreme and Madam Oaks could show up early, while all the first starters have demonstrated speed at the trials. Above average tempo expected.

Advantaged runners: Of those with race experience, PHOENIX RIVER is the clear stand out, bringing form via Green Aeon and Trope from his first prep. A repeat of any of those effort on his return from a short break would see him very competitive. He may spot a start to some handy looking debutants in the run. Sebring colt EMBRACER has produced two smart trial wins this time in work and should go forward from a middle draw. Likewise UNDOUBTED, who has already been gelded, appears as though he understands the caper while it was hard to miss PURE FAITH’s recent dashing trial at Canterbury.

RACE 4

Speed map/race shape: Zouologist should be able to take up the running fairly comfortably here, with Glamour Cat and Quick finance capable of going forward too.

Advantaged runners: ZOUOLOGIST returns to the scene of the crime after breaking his maiden here a fortnight ago. He sat outside the leader that day but should be able to control the tempo here and be equally hard to get past. REELEM IN RUBY is the obvious threat. She just missed when rattling home from the back here first up on a leader-dominated day. The extra trip suits and she loos a major player. They look to have the call over the likes of debut winner GLAMOUR CAT and the resuming PLENTY and SINGING SAND.

RACE 5

Speed map/race shape: A few of these capable of going forward from the 2110m start. Perhaps Heartlet and Hostwin Epanui can take it up form Cool One and Chief Kidder. Early favourite Carif will settle last but it is only a field of nine.

Advantaged runners: A huge percentage of the early win market is taken up by CARIF and fair enough too. The So You Think colt looked on track for the Derby when running fourth beaten 3.8L by Angel Of Truth/Madison County (the subsequent Derby quinella) in the G2 Tulloch, before bypassing the Group 1 to contest the Frank Packer Plate. This is clearly a sizeable drop in class here and as a three-year-old on the rise, he’ll be hard to hold out swooping home. The filly MRS MADRID is the main danger bouncing off her close up finish in the G3 Adrian Knox, but may have to settle further back than they’d like from the draw. HEARTLET can keep kicking on pace.

RACE 6

Speed map/race shape: Alier has drawn low and that may be enough for him to kick up and hold the lead from Lord Heron, who can drag Restrained over into the trail alongside Jazzland. Just a steady tempo expected here if they find their spots early.

Advantaged runners: Looking towards a couple of the more lightly-raced entrants here to possess a sharper sprint in the run home. The early stages will tell the story for RESTRAINED. His unbeaten record has been broken by two wide and luckless runs. He stuck on well on a leaders’ day at this venue last time and is ready for the mile now, just needs to tuck in early. MYSTIC HILL will be on his tail in her first crack at city class company. She’s progressive and has shown she runs a strong mile. Watch JAZZLAND in the yard, he’s fresh here but gets the gun run, while TAHSIN should also enjoy a nice drop on the leaders and Robbie Dolan’s claim.

RACE 7

Speed map/race shape: Art Of Excellence can shoot through and lead this, he’s known to be a keen leader over 1400m+ but on his recent efforts we can’t see the point in intentionally overdoing it at the sprint journey. Chloride and Art OF More will also be prominent.

Advantaged runners: A bit of a long tail to this finale and the topweights play a dominant hand. RONSTAR just didn’t have enough left to grind past the winner first up but he should again secure an ideal trail here and Dolan’s claim is of course helpful. Always had time for TCHAIKOVSKY and he’s been considered for higher honours by the Snowdens before, but looks to have had a few issues. He’ll be running on first up with the toppy, as will DESTINY’S OWN who returns after a solid but winless prep in similar assignments during the Spring. The booking of Bowman is crucial on UP TRUMPZ, he’s the fit horse that can take it to the others. Don’t dismiss STAR SHAFT after his excellent run in the Saturday Highway a couple of weeks ago.
